Need a handyman in San Francisco? Plan and post your small job

Post a taskPlan your brief

Opens the task form with San Francisco and in-person work selected. Posting needs a free account, and nothing is charged until you review the total and confirm funding.

How your money is protected

You pay into escrow, not to the worker. RentAHuman holds the money until the work is reviewed.

  1. 1

    Post the task

Describe the job, where, when and your budget. Share the exact address only in the private task conversation.

  2. 2

    Fund it securely

Confirm the total, including the platform fee. It is held in escrow from your RentAHuman balance, topped up through a secure checkout if needed. Then the task goes live.

  3. 3

    Hire someone

People apply. Auto-review is on by default and accepts qualified applicants for you; turn it off when posting to choose everyone yourself.

  4. 4

    The work gets done

The worker does the job and sends photos or other proof that it’s finished.

  5. 5

    Review, then release

You have 4 days to release the payment, ask for changes or reject the work. Releasing is final. No reply in 4 days? Our team reviews the proof and decides.

  6. 6

If it isn’t done as agreed

Reject the work to open a dispute; the money stays on hold. Our team either pays the worker or refunds you in full, so refunds aren’t automatic. A refund goes back into your task: hire someone else, or close it to return the money to your RentAHuman balance.

Post a request for furniture assembly, mounting or a minor repair with your neighbourhood, access details, date window and budget — the task form opens with San Francisco already filled in, and it stays filled in if you sign in or create an account first. People who can reach you apply. Posting is not a booking: nobody is confirmed until you or auto-review accept someone, and you agree the arrival time with them. RentAHuman does not check licences, so keep to small jobs that need no permit.

What to tell applicants about a San Francisco job

Applicants decide from your description whether they can reach you, carry what is needed and finish in your window. These details matter more here than a general handyman label.

  • Stairs, elevators and carrying

Many San Francisco homes sit up a flight of steps from the street, and plenty of walk-up buildings have no elevator. Say which floor you are on, how many flights there are, whether there is an elevator, how far it is from the kerb to your door and the size of the heaviest item.

  • Parking and arrival

Parking near the door is not a given in much of the city. Say whether there is a driveway or garage someone can use, or that it is street parking only, so applicants who bring tools by car can plan. If the job needs only hand tools, say so: some people may come by transit.

  • Building rules and scheduling

Apartment and condo buildings often set their own rules: permitted work hours, booking the elevator or loading area, notice to the building manager, or a vendor certificate of insurance. Check yours before you post. RentAHuman does not verify insurance, so if your building requires a certificate, confirm an applicant can provide one before accepting, or use a provider that can.

  • Walls and renter permission

Say what you know about the wall — plaster, drywall or concrete — and whether studs have been found; ask the applicant to confirm their fixings suit it. If you rent, check your lease and get your landlord’s permission before anyone drills, and note in the brief that you have it.

  • Earthquake anchoring

San Francisco’s ReadySF earthquake guide advises securing items like televisions, bookcases, cabinets and mirrors to walls or stable surfaces. If you want a bookcase or dresser anchored while it is assembled, put it in the scope and say who supplies the anchor kit.

  • Tools, materials and parts

List what you supply — the bracket, shelves, flat-pack boxes, wall anchors — and what the person should bring, such as a drill, stud finder or ladder. Confirm every part has arrived before the appointment so nobody arrives to an incomplete kit.

  • Keep the exact address private

Name your neighbourhood in the public request, for example “Inner Sunset” or “Mission”. Share the street address, unit number, entry codes and parking instructions only in the private task conversation after you accept someone.

Small jobs, not licensed trade work

A good fit

  • Flat-pack furniture assembly, including anchoring the piece with its kit
  • Mounting a TV on a bracket you supply, or hanging shelves, mirrors, curtain rods and art
  • Small fixes: swapping cabinet handles, patching a small hole, re-hanging a door on existing hinges
  • Carrying furniture between rooms or floors, with the stairs and weights stated

Hire a licensed contractor

  • Electrical, plumbing, gas, roofing or structural work
  • Any job that needs a building permit
  • Jobs worth $1,000 or more in combined labour and materials, or split into smaller jobs to stay under that
  • Emergency repairs that cannot wait for someone to apply

California’s Contractors State License Board says a contractor’s licence is needed for work on a project that requires a building permit, that uses employee labour, or that is valued at $1,000 or more in combined labour and materials. RentAHuman does not check licences, insurance or certifications, so keep requests to small jobs outside those lines and hire a licensed contractor for anything else. This is a summary, not legal advice — check the CSLB page for your situation. CSLB: What kind of contractor do I need?

Setting your budget

You set the budget for the work you describe. RentAHuman does not publish a San Francisco handyman price list, and nobody is obliged to accept your offer. Build the number from the parts below so applicants can see what they are agreeing to.

Part of the budgetWhat to account for
Labour timeEstimate the hours for each job on the list, plus time to unpack, check parts and clean up.
MaterialsSay who buys the brackets, anchors or hardware. If the person buys them, include that cost in the budget and say so.
Access and carryingStairs, no elevator, heavy items or a long carry take longer. State them so the budget covers them.
People neededIf lifting or holding a large TV in place needs two people, set Spots Available to 2 instead of expecting one person to bring a helper. The price is per person, so the total doubles.
Minimum rateSome locations show a minimum hourly pay rate on the form. If it appears for your request, your budget needs to meet it.

If nobody applies, a clearer scope, a higher budget or a wider date window may help.

An example San Francisco brief

Copy it, replace the bracketed parts and paste it into the task description — or hand it to your AI assistant. The neighbourhood goes in the request; the street address waits for the private conversation.

  • Flat-pack assembly in a walk-up

A bed frame and wardrobe delivered to the street door of a third-floor flat. Say the boxes are downstairs so the time for carrying them up is in the budget.

  • TV and shelves in a rental

A TV on a bracket you supply and two shelves, with your landlord’s permission noted and the wall type described.

  • A short list of small fixes

Four cabinet handles, a patched picture-hook hole and a sticking door re-hung on its existing hinges, each listed separately.

Example San Francisco brief
Task: Mount a 55-inch TV on a wall bracket I have bought, and hang two floating shelves (mounting kits included).
Where: Inner Sunset, San Francisco (exact address shared after I accept someone).
Access: Third-floor flat, two flights of stairs from the street, no elevator. Street parking only.
Wall: Plaster in an older building; studs not yet located — please bring a stud finder and fixings suited to plaster.
Permission: My landlord has approved drilling for the bracket and shelves.
When: [date], any 3-hour window between [start] and [end]. The building allows work on weekdays between [hours].
Budget: [your total] for labour; I supply the bracket and shelves.
Done means: TV level and secure on the bracket, shelves level, cables tidied with the included cover, dust cleaned up.
Evidence: photos of the mounted TV, both shelves and the cleaned-up area.
Not included: no electrical work — the outlet stays where it is.

Screening applicants

  • Read each applicant’s profile, reviews and note, and look for experience with your exact job — the same furniture brand, bracket type or wall material.
  • Ask how they would fix into your wall and which tools and anchors they will bring.
  • Check they have read the access details: floor, stairs, elevator, parking and building hours.
  • If your building needs a certificate of insurance, ask before accepting — an application is not proof of insurance or a licence.
  • Auto-review is on by default: it accepts applicants who qualify, declines clear mismatches with a reason and leaves uncertain ones for you. Switch it off on the form to choose every person yourself.
  • Accepting someone does not set a time. Agree the arrival window in the task conversation before sharing the address.

Next steps

  1. 1

    Press “Post a task”

The form opens with San Francisco and in-person work selected. Sign in or create a free account if asked; the city stays filled in when you come back.

  2. 2

Paste your brief and fund it

Add the details above, set your budget and confirm the total. The money is held in escrow and the request goes live; nobody is assigned yet.

  3. 3

    Screen and accept

Review applicants with the checks above, or let auto-review accept qualified ones.

  4. 4

Agree timing, then share the address

Settle the arrival window in the task conversation, then share the address, access and parking details there.

  5. 5

    Review within 4 days

Release the payment, ask for changes or reject the work within 4 days of it being marked complete. Releasing is final; if you don’t respond, our team reviews the work.

For the full scope checklist, status meanings and how auto-review works, read the main handyman help guide.

Questions

Can I get a handyman in San Francisco today or this week?
Maybe, but it is not guaranteed. A posted request recruits people who can reach you; there is no dispatch, no set arrival time and no same-day promise. Give a date window, and don’t rely on a request for an emergency repair.
How much should I budget for a handyman in San Francisco?
You set the total. RentAHuman does not publish San Francisco prices; estimate the hours for each job, add materials the person buys, and allow for stairs and carrying. Some locations show a minimum hourly pay rate on the form, and if nobody applies a clearer scope or a higher budget may help.
When do I need a licensed contractor instead?
California’s Contractors State License Board requires a licence for work on a project that needs a building permit, uses employee labour, or is valued at $1,000 or more in combined labour and materials. RentAHuman does not check licences, so use a licensed contractor for that work.
I rent. Can someone drill into my walls?
Check your lease and get your landlord’s permission before anyone drills, then say in the brief that you have it. Describe the wall type if you know it and ask the applicant to confirm their fixings suit it.
Will San Francisco still be filled in if I have to sign up first?
Yes. The “Post a task” link carries the city, state, country and in-person setting. Signing in or creating an account returns you to the task form with them still selected; you can change them there.
What if the job isn’t done properly?
Your payment stays in escrow until the work is reviewed. Within 4 days of the task being marked complete, release it, ask for changes or reject it. Rejecting opens a dispute: our team reviews the evidence and either pays the worker or refunds the money to your task, so a refund is not automatic. Closing the task returns unused money to your RentAHuman balance rather than your card. If you don’t respond within the 4 days, our team reviews the work. Releasing is final.
