Request 2 French birth extracts (born abroad, SCEC Nantes) online and upload the scans
Genealogy research task (historical/family research), done fully online + by post. You need a postal address in France.
What to do:
1. Using the French Foreign Ministry's free official service for civil-status records of French people born abroad (Service central d'état civil, Nantes — "demande d'acte d'état civil" on diplomatie.gouv.fr / service-public), request IN YOUR OWN NAME, as the requester:
a) an "extrait d'acte de naissance SANS filiation" (birth extract without parentage) for person A (born 1949 in Poland, French national, birth registered at a French consulate);
b) an "extrait d'acte de naissance SANS filiation" for person B (born 1952 in Poland, later naturalized French);
c) for person A only: a "copie intégrale" (full copy) of the birth record, requested as a public archive for historical and genealogical research.
2. Never claim to be a relative or to have a family link.
3. When the documents arrive by post, upload clear scans or photos of every page (and of the envelope / any reply letter, e.g. "no record found").
What French law says (why A and B are treated differently):
- Extract WITHOUT parentage ("extrait sans filiation"): can be issued to ANYONE, without justification (décret n° 2017-890, art. 30) — so (a) and (b) are open to you for both persons.
- Full copy / extract WITH parentage: while a birth record is less than 75 years old, only the person, their spouse, ascendants, descendants or legal representative may obtain it. After 75 years the record becomes a freely accessible public archive (Code du patrimoine, art. L213-2, I, 4° e). The 75 years run from the CLOSING of the register (end of the year of birth).
- Person A, born 1949: register closed end of 1949 → public since 1 January 2025 → you may ask for the full copy (c), stating "archive publique de plus de 75 ans (art. L213-2 du Code du patrimoine), recherche historique et généalogique".
- Person B, born 1952: register closed end of 1952 → public only from 1 January 2028 → for B ask ONLY the extract without parentage (b). Do not ask a full copy for B and never present yourself as family.
- If the online form insists on a family relationship for (c), use the archive/research route (a short letter or e-mail to the Service central d'état civil citing the article above) or skip (c) and tell us.
Names, dates and places of birth of A and B will be sent to the accepted worker in the bounty conversation (not posted publicly).
Requests are free; the post usually takes 1-4 weeks. Payment on delivery of the scans (or of the official answer if a record doesn't exist).
