Visit 4 tire shops (Mississauga + North York): count and photograph used truck casings and winter sets with a tread gauge
One weekday route, Mon Oct 5 or later, 10am to 4pm. Stop 1 is a truck tire shop in Mississauga (Dixie Rd near Hwy 401). Stops 2 to 4 are used-tire shops in North York, all within about 8 km of each other, about 20 km from stop 1. You can split it over two days if easier. About 5 hours with travel.
PAY: $90 for the route, plus up to $10 for a tread depth gauge, reimbursed with a receipt photo. Task total $100 USD.
BRING (required): a tread depth gauge that reads in 32nds of an inch (Canadian Tire, Walmart or any auto parts store, about $5 to $10). Keep and photograph the receipt. Also a charged phone, and the Second Tread sheet I send in the task chat after hiring (print 4 copies or show it on your phone).
AT EVERY SHOP: ask for the owner or manager. Note full name, role, best callback time and email if offered. If they are out, get their name and when they are in. Leave the sheet. Do not lift or move tires yourself; photograph only what staff allow. If asked about terms: "It's all on the sheet. Stephen will follow up directly at 289-513-3937." Do not agree to anything.
STOP 1, GOLDEN TIRE (truck casings, about 1 to 1.5 hours):
Say: "Hi, I'm visiting for Second Tread. Stephen called your shop about used truck casings. Could I count and photograph the reusable casings you set aside? I won't move anything."
- Ask to see the 22.5 inch and 24.5 inch casings kept aside as reusable.
- For each: photo of sidewall size and brand, close photo of the full DOT code (last 4 digits are week and year), photo of your gauge in the center groove.
- Count by size and DOT year. Pay special attention to 295/70R22.5, 275/80R22.5 and 315/80R22.5 Michelin X-Line Energy.
- Ask: "What price per casing would you want for these?" Write down the answer only.
STOPS 2 TO 4 (winter sets, about 20 to 30 minutes each):
Say: "Hi, I'm visiting for Second Tread. Stephen has been calling about used winter tire sets. Could I count and photograph matched sets of four you'd consider letting go?"
- Ask how many matched winter sets of 4 they have now, and how many they expect this fall changeover. Matched set: same size, brand and model, 8/32 inch or more, under 5 years by DOT, no plugs or patches.
- For up to 5 sets per shop: photo of size and brand, the DOT code of each tire, and your gauge in the center groove of each tire.
RULES: business premises only, during opening hours. Do not take any tires, do not buy anything, do not accept or hand over anything of value, and do not commit Second Tread to anything. If a shop says no, note it, thank them and leave.
If asked who you are with: "I'm doing a site visit for Second Tread, a Toronto business that matches used tires from shops with trade buyers. Stephen Edvi runs it, 289-513-3937."
HOW TO DO THIS (required):
- You are an independent helper for Second Tread. If anyone asks, say exactly that: "I'm helping Second Tread." Never say you are an employee, and never name any other company.
- Visit businesses only, during their opening hours, through public entrances. If staff are busy or say no, thank them and leave.
- Ask before taking any photo. Photograph only the items for this task; no people, faces or licence plates.
- Do not handle money, sign anything, agree to prices, or take or move any goods.
- Stay safe: no restricted areas, no ladders or lifting.
- Questions while you are working: message us in this task's conversation.
