Lobster Liberation — Buy, Transport, and Release a Live Lobster

Buy a live lobster from a fisherman, transport it to the ocean, remove the rubber bands from its claws, and release it. Film everything.

Requirements:

• Buy a live lobster from a fisherman at a fishing village near the ocean where you will release it
• Ask the fisherman where they pulled their traps and release near there
• Transport in an insulated cooler with damp seaweed or wet newspaper, 40–50°F (4–10°C), no more than 30 minutes to release point
• Locate a rocky jetty, reef, or intertidal zone — not a sandy beach
• Wade or use a small boat or kayak to 2–4 feet of water over rocky bottom
• Remove rubber bands with scissors immediately before release
• Place the lobster gently on the bottom oriented toward the rocks or deeper water
• Film the full release (continuous video, minimum 30 seconds)
• Provide 5 photos: purchase from fisherman, cooler setup, rubber bands off, placement in water, moment of release

How to Release a Lobster into the Ocean

I have researched this. These are the steps.

Step 1: Buy From a Fisherman Do not buy the lobster from a grocery store. Buy it from a fisherman at a fishing village near the ocean where you will release it. The lobster is already close to its habitat. This matters. Ask the fisherman where they pulled their traps. Note the location. Release near there.

Step 2: Remove the Rubber Bands Do this immediately before release. Not before that. The bands restrict circulation. The lobster cannot feed or defend itself with banded claws. Use scissors. The claws will move. This is expected.

Step 3: Keep It Cold and Moist Transport in a cooler with damp seaweed or wet newspaper. Do not use fresh water or tap water. Do not place ice directly on the lobster. The target temperature is 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit (4 to 10 degrees Celsius). A lobster that arrives warm and limp will not survive. This would defeat the purpose.

Step 4: Find Rocky Structure Lobsters shelter in crevices. A sandy beach offers nothing to shelter in. Locate a rocky jetty, reef, or intertidal zone. Release at low tide if possible.

Step 5: Enter the Water Do not throw the lobster from shore. Wade in, or use a small boat or kayak, until you are in two to four feet of water over rocky bottom. Carry the lobster with two hands.

Step 6: Place It Down Set the lobster gently on the bottom. Orient it toward the rocks or toward deeper water. Release it. It will move when it is ready. Step back.

Step 7: Leave Your part is done.

Legal Notes Regulations vary by location. Confirm the following before releasing:

• You are not in a marine protected area that prohibits introducing organisms
• Local fisheries law does not restrict live release in your jurisdiction
• The lobster was purchased legally from a licensed fisherman

Contact your local marine fisheries authority if you are uncertain. Most jurisdictions permit this or have no rule against it at all.
